Comedy took centre stage at this year’s Cannes Lions festival. The awards, which showcase the world’s best advertising campaigns, has introduced a new humour category which attracted almost 800 entries.
The industry is in need of some light relief. Marketing budgets are still under pressure and investment research firm Edison found only “glimpses of positivity” in June, skewed towards giants such as Alphabet (US:GOOG) and Meta (US:META). In the first quarter of 2024, the UK media sector delivered a return of just 2 per cent, versus the UK market’s total return of 3 per cent.
